The Shipyard project is getting a major financial boost to move forward in the Broadway District. The city of Green Bay was preliminarily awarded $5 million by the National Park Service for the second phase of the project.

The Shipyard is located on the western edge of the Fox River just north of the Mason Street Bridge. Construction is set to begin in June on the first phase of the project which will include a riverfront promenade, floating docks, a fishing pier, and a kayak launch. Phase one will cost about $7.8 million.

Phase two of the Shipyard plans include public amenities like a great lawn, a dog park, an urban beach, and a playground. Construction on phase two is estimated to begin in summer of 2023.

“Major redevelopment projects are a process and take time to evolve. The vision for the Shipyard began four years ago and we're fulfilling our promise to deliver a community vision for the Southern Broadway corridor that has evolved with a significant amount of community and stakeholder input,” said Brian Johnson, executive director, On Broadway, Inc. “This property has been owned by the City for 40 years and has remained idle contributing no value to our community. Now, we are offering diversified housing, mixed use commercial space and a first-class park facility that will transform the way our community interacts with our riverfront.”

Merge Urban Development has a development agreement with the City to construct 225 market rate apartments on the northern slip of the site. Additionally, the Redevelopment Authority approved a term sheet with Impact Seven to construct 238 working class units on the site of the former Badger Sheet Metal property across the street from the Shipyard. These two developments will yield approximately $43 million in assessable value for the City of Green Bay.

Phase three of the project includes a container park and the completion date is yet to be determined.
